A sort of skin disease is known as Shingles.Another name for it is Herpes Zoster.Shingles is caused by a virus Varicella Zoster Virus.Children have chicken pox de to this.When a child has chicken pox due to VZ virus it makes the virus remain in the spine nerve cells of the child.After getting treated for chicken pox the virus is still latent in the body.It causes no damage till it erupts again.When a person has an initiation of the VZ virus as a result of stress, fever and any infection that weakens the body, the person is said to have Shingles.

The indications of Shingles are itchiness along with burning sensation and pain.The person may have no sensation in the affected ares.The area affected can be any part of the body like abdomen, neck, back, arm or leg.There is advance of tender lymph nodes after pain occurs.A person may also have associated symptoms like diarrhoea, fever with chills, nausea, stomachache etc.The person will have red rashes that turn into blisters with in 3-5 days.These blisters form a cluster, usually involving a single nerve path or sometimes a group of nerves.

In the beginning the blisters are filled with only fluid and later in about 3-5 days they become overcast.Slowly, the blisters erupt leading to formation of crusting and then finally healing starts.This disease lasts for about 3-4 weeks.

Sometimes, even after healing of the disease, there may be intense pain along the path of the nerve involved.This condition is known as Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN).The person has an agonizing pain because of this.The total cure happens after some days, weeks or even months.

The analysis of Shingles happens only through its signs.The distribution of lesion creates suspicion for the shingles disease.In the clinical testing there is scuff from blisters or swap taken from it to identify shingles.

A pain killer is given as treatment for shingles.Also certain antivirals like valacyclovir, acyclovir, famiciclovir etc also given.The pain and rash gets reduced due to these drugs.This treatment gives symptomatic relief from pain alone.Sometimes, if the itching is very much, some lotions like calamine lotion is also prescribed.
